Our Review of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress

Although we do offer featherbeds, we prefer a firmer mattress for sleeping.  We have tried many over the years, including Temper-Pedic®, Simmons Beautyrest Black and the Sealy iComfort.  None of these mattresses lasted us more than a few years, before losing that special new mattress magic.  Maybe that's how they all are?  I guess we'll see if our new Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress lasts any longer.

Since this review was written, we've tried some more mattresses.  Here's our review of the Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze mattress, our review of the Avocado Organic Luxury mattress and our review of the Intellibed Nightfall mattress

Our most recent mattress, the Sealy iComfort was about 5 years old and was becoming increasingly uncomfortable.  Waking up with a backache is not the best way to start your day, and my wife could barely get out of our old mattress.  So, we started shopping.

Final Update - Goodbye Mint, Hello Original

Tuft & Needle was awesome and shipped us a new Mint mattress and paid to have our old one picked up.  Unfortunately, the new Mint mattress was also deformed at the corners, and thinner at the corners, just like the old one.

I don't really understand how this could happen without Tuft & Needle being aware of this issue.  Just think about it; 2 different Mint mattresses, manufactured 1 year apart from each other, with the same defect?  What are the odds?  It strikes me that there must be something about the composition of the foam in the Mint that does not respond well to the compression it undergoes to make it small for shipping.

Tuft and Needle did arrange to have the new "replacement" mattress picked up, and refunded our purchase even though it was technically out of the refund period.  I found their customer service people to be very helpful, understanding, concerned about and responsive to the issues we presented.  Even so, given what we experienced, we cannot recommend the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress.  However...

We also have an "Original" Tuft and Needle mattress in our guest room and it has none of the issues described below.  If fact, the "Original" is a really nice mattress, and very comfortable.  It has now moved to the master bedroom!  We can definitely recommend the "Original" if you're looking for good "bed in a box" at a decent price.

One Year Update

When unpacking the Tuft & Needle mattress, it is supposed to expand and assume the proportions of a proper mattress.  Unfortunately, ours did not complete its metamorphosis.

I had noticed that the upper right hand corner and the lower left hand corner had some significant indentations, and that they were not as thick as the rest of the mattress, about 10" or so, with the rest of the mattress being about 12" thick.

One year later, this mattress still has the indented and thin corners.  I think I've given this plenty of time to correct itself on its own.  So I've reached out to Tuft and Needle to see what they think.  I will update this as progress indicates.  In the meantime, here's a photo of one of the corners of our 1 year old Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress.

If you look closely at the original photograph of the "unboxed mattress" (below, 2nd to last photo from the bottom) you can see the same indentation that is shown in this photo.  I had expected that the mattress would grow out of this stage, given time.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Problem

The Original Review - 1 Year Ago

If you read the title of this article, you know by now that we ended up buying the Tuft & Needle Mint.  Why?  A couple of reasons...  The Mint is supposed to offer more edge support than the regular Tuft & Needle, and the price was right at a thou$sand or two (or three) less than what we might easily have spent on another mattress.

Having slept on our new mattress for a couple of weeks now, I feel comfortable giving my initial impression of this bed: We like it. A lot.

After unboxing and dressing our new bed to get it ready for some serious sleeping. it took about 3 days for my backache from the other mattress to go away.  It took a couple more days for my body (side sleeper knees and hips) to adjust to the new pressure points.  But after that initial "getting to know you" period, I am now sleeping more soundly than I've slept for years, with no aches and pains.

I'd say the mattress is about a medium firmness - not quite firm enough to sit on with comfort, but I'm a big guy - about 6'7" and 270lbs.  So I can't really fault the mattress for not being a chair.  It is a bed, and it does what a bed is supposed to do, very well.  And that edge support?  It's good when I'm laying near the edge, but like I said, I'm not a light weight and that "extra" edge support pretty much runs away screaming when I sit on it!

But when I'm sleeping on the mattress, whether it be on my side (I'm mostly a side sleeper), or my back, and sometimes my stomach, I've found the Tuft & Needle Mint to be, in a word, Awesome! No getting sucked into this mattress, it's very easy to change position.  Even more importantly I suppose, is that I'm changing position because I want to, not because my mattress is uncomfortable.

A word about the cooling properties, with all of it's graphite and ceramic cooling gels, of the Tuft & Needle Mint:  I'm not a hot sleeper, but my wife is and she says that she is very comfortable temperature wise, even with this unusually warm summer of 2018 that we're having.  For me, I was actually concerned that with all the "cooling" technology, the mattress might not be warm enough.  Silly me. It's perfect.

I will update this article as time passes.  Here's to hoping that the comfort will not fade.  Now to the unboxing photos...

The Tuft & Needle Mint Bed in a Box... Box!

The Bed in a Box Box

Once out of the box, the mattress was bursting at the plastic.  Unwrapping it was easy.  As you unwrap it, it will pretty much unroll itself.

Mattress wrapped in plastic

O.K., this is a King Size mattress, and weighs about 100lbs.  Why they package it so you have to flip it over once on the bed is a mystery. Perhaps because the cover looks so nice?  Still, it would be easier to handle if it was folded so that the bottom was on the bottom!

But, once flipped over all that's left to do is take the rest of the plastic off.  Cutting it was the hardest part.  Sliding the plastic out from under the mattress was surprisingly easy.

The mattress is expanding pretty quickly, you can see that most of the wrinkles in the cover have been filled out.  It took a few more hours for it to completely expand, but it's all good now.
