How Fill Power Affects Down Comforter Warmth and Pillow Firmness

Fill Power is an "industry standard" measurement used to describe the quality, and specifically the size, of the goose down clusters used to fill down bedding.  A higher fill power rating indicates a larger cluster, higher quality goose down.

For down comforters, a higher fill power goose down will provide a wider comfort range, ie; it will help to keep you warmer when it's cold and cooler when it's warm, compared to a lower quality down.

For down pillows, a higher fill power rating will provide more support, resilience and durability compared to a lower fill power rating. Here's some more information about fill power and choosing a down pillow, along with a video that shows the difference between our 700, 800 and 900 fill power goose down.

Cleanliness

All Plumeria Bay® goose down goes through an extensive state-of-the-art cleaning and sanitizing process.  By the time this gentle cleaning process is complete, our down is considered sterilized, bacteria free and hypoallergenic with minimum standards for turbidity at 600 to 1000 mm & oxygen at 4.8 or less.  This is very clean, far exceeding any government standards.

Origins & Ethics

The origin of your goose down is important to know.

Our Cascade Made™ down comforters and pillows are manufactured in our facility, in the heart of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Plumeria Bay® is a certified RDS manufacturer, and all of the goose down used in our Cascade Made™ down comforters and pillows is RDS certified, which means that all of this goose down is certified to come from geese that have been humanely treated, and that the down has been ethically harvested.

Is that a spot of gray that I see?! Sometimes, you may notice dark spots through the fabric on your comforter or pillow. These are dark (gray) clusters of down and are present, to some degree, in even the highest quality (unbleached) hand selected white goose down. Goose down turns gray as the goose gets older (just like our hair). This is natural, and the fill is not inferior in any way.

When present, these random dark clusters are usually only visible when compressed under the fine white fabric. If you were to open the pillow or comforter and allow the down to expand it would be very difficult to see any dark clusters.
