The Responsible Down Standard (The RDS) was established in 2014 with input from animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands and retailers, with the goal to:
- Educate, and encourage demand for strong animal welfare practices.
- Provide a tool (see above) that allows companies to make accurate content claims, and for consumers to know what is in the products.
- Assure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to unnecessary harm.
- Provide guidelines to help safeguard the health and well being of geese and ducks, in the process of gathering down and feathers.
The RDS is an independent, voluntary global standard. This means that companies that manufacture and supply down bedding, like Plumeria Bay®, have the choice to participate and meet the requirements of the RDS. This also means that consumers can choose to purchase from a company that meets the requirements of the RDS.
Plumeria Bay® feels that the RDS is very valuable and important, both to the health and well being of the animals before they are harvested for food, and also for the education of the consumer. We are proud to have become a part of this standard.
The Key Principles of the Responsible Down Standard
1: From hatching to slaughter, a safe environment for the geese must be provided with adherence to the guidelines of the Five Freedoms:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
- Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention and/or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Freedom to Express Normal Behavior - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.
- Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
2: Each stage in the supply chain; from supplier or farmer, to processors, to manufacturers and retailers, basically every entity in the RDS supply chain, is audited by a third-party certification body. No matter where an organization lies in the supply chain, it must provide proper documentation that the down has been acquired from an RDS Certified supplier.
3: Force-feeding of the birds is prohibited
4: Removal of down or feathers from live birds (live plucking or molt harvesting) is prohibited
5: RDS down (and feathers) must be properly identified, stored and processed to assure that it will not be mingled with non-RDS down and feather.
6: Only products with 100% Certified down and feather can carry the RDS logo.
